智慧永續管理學院 柯O嘉:
Studying abroad has been one of the most challenging but also most meaningful experiences in my life. As a student from Indonesia, coming to Taiwan felt like entering a completely different world. The culture shock was real! not only in daily life, but also in the way people study, communicate, and interact. Everything felt unfamiliar at first, and honestly, it was quite overwhelming for me.
The biggest challenge for me was the language. When i first arrived, i could not speak 中文 at all. I had always studied in Bahasa Indonesia, so suddenly being surrounded by 中文 everywhere made even simple things difficult. Ordering food, reading signs, or understanding what people were saying around me became daily struggles. In class, it was even harder. I often could not fully understand lectures, and sometimes i felt left behind because il needed more time to process everything.
Receiving a scholarship meant that i had to push myself out of my comfort zone. I knew the opportunity to get a scholarship was valuable, so even though it was difficult, i kept trying. My first semester was not easy. I struggled to follow lessons and adapt to a new learning style. There were moments when i felt unsure of myself and questioned whether i could really succeed here.
But thankfully, i was not alone. I am very grateful for the support i received along the way. The teachers here were kind and patient, always willing to help when i had difficulties. My friends were also very supportive, they helped me understand lessons, encouraged me, and made me feel less alone. My family back home also played a big role in supporting me emotionally and reminding me to stay strong.
From semester one to semester three, i can see clear improvement in myself and my grades. At first, i was just trying to keep up, but slowly i became more used to the system here. I started to understand more, communicate better, and feel more confident. With my grades improving each semester, it motivates me to keep going. I built better study habits and became more disciplined in managing my time.
Joining the academic improvement program was also very helpful for me. It gave me extra motivation to study regularly and helped me become more consistent. Through this program, i became more diligent and more comfortable with the learning environment in Taiwan. It made me realize that with effort and persistence, improvement is always possible.
Looking back, i realize that all the difficulties i experienced were part of the process of growing. This journey has taught me to be more resilient, adaptable, and confident. I am truly thankful for all the support from my teachers, friends, and family, as well as for the opportunity to study here. In the future, i will continue to challenge myself, improve my abilities, and make the most of this valuable experience.
